What?
Upcycling
is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into
new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental
value.
Why?
We love our pets here in Seattle. According to the 2010 US Census, 29.5% of Seattle homes have cats, and 25.2% have dogs. Interestingly enough, only 19% have kids. Pet's make waste (so do kids, but that's another story) which traditionally is thrown out into landfills in plastic bags or just left in the yard.
We love the environment here in Seattle and when the traditional status quo is not sufficient, we do something about it. As pet populations increase drastically, dealing with pet waste is becoming a more pressing issue. Groundwater runoff contamination , greenhouse gas emissions, and the plastic bag dilemma, are just some of the problems associated with mass pet populations. Additionally, many so-called compostable or biodegradable poop bags don't break down as advertised and contain toxic polymers.
Here's the thing, pet waste is made of biological material and has intrinsic value. The key is to harness the power of the poop, while at the same time managing the dangers.
How?
The Bokashi method is an ancient Eastern anaerobic (without oxygen) fermentation process in which adding microbes via a special formulated bran is used to help breakdown the waste and kill pathogens in a oxygen free environment. Eco-Mutt is teaming with Bokashicycle and using their efficiently designed Bokashi Pet Cycle to take your dog or cats waste and turn it into a rich soil additive that can be used for ornamental gardening. We recommend only ornamental gardening due to the small risk that organisms in the feces are not killed and when placed near a vegetable garden could cause problems.
Where?
Eco-Mutt will come to your home to set up and provide weekly service visits to conduct the waste processing so you can take advantage of the benefits of having your soil enriched with your own pet's waste!
